Broadway Performance Hall
This show really exemplified the unique Dare to Dance ethos of bringing together a wide range of people and dance styles into one dynamic show. Held at the Broadway Performance Hall in April 2014, it was packed with 12 original dance pieces featuring over 50 dancers.
The show opened with a stunning contemporary piece by Impulse Artistry set to Lorde’s version of Everybody Wants to Rule the World, followed by a humorous take on growing old by The Candy Ladies. Future World Latin Dance Cup medalist Sarah Gordon performed two unique pieces with dance partner Anton Lukyanov. Karen Ludwig and Thrill the World’s Sheri Kinley impressed with a classic burlesque number, while Jonathan Williams’s company showcased a medley of powerful dance styles. Sandi Olson introduced many of us to local artists Fly Moon Royalty with her performance of My Heart Keeps Pumping, and Stephen Lloyd’s voice singing On Lexington & 52nd St (from TV’s Smash) gave us all goosebumps.
We finished the show off with a grand tribute to ’90s hip-hop that involved 19 dancers and 5 smash hits. Choreographers Alaina Dale and Diadra Smith made it a true ensemble piece where everyone had a chance to shine. “The style of dance and fashion in the ’90s was iconic,” said Alaina. “I was a kid when most of those songs came out, so choreographing this dance was a fun way to re-live part of my childhood.”
