It all started with a dare: Can a group of friends who are “not dancers” choreograph and perform a whole new dance show?
The year was 2010. The runaway success of “Glee” put everyone in a singing, dancing kind of mood, and kick-started Seattle’s flash mob scene. As a wild idea for his 35th birthday, our founder, Zheng Wang, approached his flash mob friends with a question: “Do you want to be in a dance show? Oh and by the way… We will create our own dance pieces. Even though most of us have no professional training and never choreographed.”
Amazingly, they said yes. Even more amazingly, the whole show came together in a mere month and half! On Dec 17, 2010, at the Erickson Theatre on Capitol Hill, more than 30 dance enthusiasts performed the very first Dare to Dance show to a sold-out audience.
How did it go? This review from one audience member pretty much sums it up:
“I went to Dare to Dance with no expectations… It was pure Joy. Everyone in the cast had obviously put not only their time and energy into the show but also what seemed like the whole lot of their Spirit, Love, Heart, Passion, Creativity, Joy, Humor, Generosity, and FUN. Give yourself a treat and go experience a group of your fellow human beings as they ‘dare to dance’.”
Just as importantly, all the dancers had a blast!
