Dance can often help us process our internal thoughts and feelings, and our look back at Dare to Dance 5: Love Uprising provides a wealth of expression. The show began with Zheng Wang’s powerful message of resilience in Love Runs Out, followed by an upbeat medley with dancers of all ages in REMIX Dance Team’s Passing the Torch. Slowing the beat but not the intensity, Brynn Tweeddale’s solo using Yael Naïm’s rendition of Toxic provided a somber tone that continued with David Swanson’s solo to Hold Back the River.
Not letting us dwell in melancholy, Jonathan Williams’s troupe not only got the beat going again, but also featured fine artist Peggy Polynice with a canvas and easel painting her reflections of their Reflections of Love on stage as dancers swirled around her. Next, Crystal Krippaehne’s love of theater shone through in an elaborate City Rhythm performance, awash with scenery and set pieces that reimagined downtown Seattle for Broadway stage.
Bernice Jing Ye and Serghei Aleksandrov-Koshkin’s Tango Noir Desde El Alma (Vals) gave us a sultry view of love, while Sandi Olson’s Somos Sur (We Are the South) placed us at the center of an uprising that ended in joy. The glow of Sarah Gordon and Anton Lukyanov’s costumes in Beating Heart accented their amazing duet. Zheng Wang’s One Love, featuring music by U2, completed the show with a message of hope.
